Keyword Research Terms

This article listed the definitions of common terms that are using in keyword research to analysis the best keywords for the purposes of both SEM (Search Engine Marketing) or SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

  • Keywords or keyword phrases

The search terms that a searcher types into the search engines to find whatever they’re looking for on the internet.

  • Specific keywords or long tail keywords

Keywords that comprises two or more words and contains the main keyword.

  • Keyword research

It is the process of selecting the most appropriate keywords for optimizing your search engine rankings (SEO) or your site promotion (SEM).

  • Keyword Popularity /Number of search/Search Volume

It is the number of searches performed during a certain period – per day, per week, or per month on the particular search engine. It can be varied amongst different keyword tools as it depends on their counting methodology and how they estimate the search queries.

You can use the search volume number as an indicator as keyword research tools use only samples of data, so we can’t assume that is 100% correct.

  • Match Type

If you use Google Adwords’ Keyword Tool, you will get search volume with selected match type. This is the advanced keyword targeting options that adjusts the way a keyword is matched to what searchers type into the search engines, comprising:

Broad match: the keyword phrase as is – to match with the same phrase or slight variations of it, including the words are separated by other words or even out of order.

Exact match: surround keyword phrase with brackets i.e. [keyword phrase] – to match with the exact keyword phrase only

Phrase match: with quotations on either side of keyword phrase i.e. “keyword phrase” – to match with that keyword phrase as search terms and other terms that contains same phrase un-separated.

  • Competition/Searches

Number of sites resulted from search engine’s index when people are typing a keyword into the search engines.

  • R/S Ratio (Results/Searches Ratio)

Results-To-Searches Ratios is resulted from the search engine’s index results divided by search volume. The lower ratio indicates the better keyword and the more profitable keyword.

  • Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI)

KEI is a measure of keyword effectiveness that is computed based on search volume and number of searches. The higher KEI the better the keyword effectiveness.

KEI was invented by Sumantra Roy (a SEO expert) of 1srSearchRanking.com.

  • CPC (Cost Per Click)

CPC is the cost a PPC advertiser have to pay for a click.

Maximum CPC is the maximum amount of money an advertiser is willing to pay for a click.

Average CPC is the predicted average cost each time a user clicks your ad (on ppc advertising) on the associated keyword for the specific position range.

  • Keyword Tool

Tool in the Internet (web-based tool) that you can use to find what words or phrases people are typing into the major search engines and other useful information for keyword analysis.

  • Keyword Software

The downloadable software or application to find what words or phrases people are typing into the major search engines and other useful information for keyword analysis.

Keyword density is an indicator of the number of times the selected keyword appears in the web page. It is usually expressed as a percentage of the total word content on the web page.
